MY EQUIPMENT OF CHOICE

One of the most asked questions I get is “What materials do you use?” My preferred surface is a fine canvas stretched onto an acid free board. In more recent times I’ve been exploring MDF boards. I much prefer the surface of canvas to paint on, yet prefer to draw on the MDF... So there’s a bit of a balancing act going on at the moment! As for my oil paints, there is no particular brand I prefer, although I do support the Australian brand 'Art Spectrum'. Recently I’ve been using Michael Harding Oils and they are brilliant. My medium is Liquin or Liquol. I love the fast drying times, as I work with many thin glazes. I’ve been using Rosemary and Co brushes for about 5 years. They certainly make a fine brush. I really like the Ivory series filberts. As I tend to go through a lot of finer brushes my orders to the UK are relatively constant. When I really want to spoil myself, my weapons of choice are imitation sable Robert Wades. Lovely brushes!

Many people have asked about the white pens I often use in my sketches. They are a Japanese brand called 'Sakura Gelly Roll'. A friend of mine, who spent a lifetime as a Disney cartoonist, put me onto these pens many years ago…fabulous bit of kit and they produce a great effect where highlights are needed! For the black line work I use any old black pen, as long as it’s archival! Most of my sketches are graphite with no particular brand favourite. I hope this helps those of you have been spending sleepless nights wondering what materials I use!
